Smile Makeover

At Cambridge Smile Studio we offer a wide range of cosmetic dentistry to help improve your smile. A smile makeover to one person could mean something entirely different to another, and it is a very individual choice.

A beautiful smile is one of the most desirable and valuable assets you can have. Together with personality, these attributes say a lot about you and make up a large part of any first impression you may make. Having perfect teeth can really boost your self confidence and make you more likely to smile!

You will need to book a consultation to determine exactly what treatment you will need to achieve your personal smile makeover but to give an idea of the treatment stages, here is an overview of the smile makeover options including Porcelain laminate veneers.

Porcelain veneers
Porcelain laminate veneers are wafer thin shells of ceramic material which are bonded to the front of teeth. They can be placed to mask discolouration, brighten teeth, change shape or to give an illusion of a change in alignment of teeth, crowding , spacing etc. If placed using the latest bonding techniques by a suitably trained dentist they should last for many years.

Dental bridges
This is a fixed solution that involves a dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth by attaching an artificial tooth permanently to an adjacent tooth or dental implant.

Tooth whitening
This is a process where the tooth discolouration is ‘whitened’ to a lighter shade. It removes the staining agent through chemical means. It is a safe procedure when carried out under professional supervision. Treatment results usually depend on the severity of the discolouration.

Dental implants
A dental implant is a surgical device used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is fused to your jawbone and will then permanently support a crown, bridge, denture or facial prosthetic, or it can act as an orthodontic anchor.

Composite bonding
This involves the use of various adhesives and dental composites to repair minor types of tooth damage, such as cracks or gaps.

Dental restoration
Dental restoration techniques commonly involve the use of crowns and fillings. A crown is a type of dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant. You may need a crown when a large cavity threatens the health of a tooth, or if you need a tooth extracting. Fillings are basically restorative materials used to fill up the voids formed by smaller cavities and/or to prevent further decay.

General Orthodontics
We have expertise in Invisalign as well as modern alternatives to traditional dental braces.

The Procedure

Diagnosis and treatment planning

A full consultation takes place where the patient and the dentist are equally involved in the decision making. The fees are usually discussed at this stage.

Impressions & photographs

A short appointment is taken of the teeth and photographs taken. This is sent to the laboratory to create a mock up of the finished new smile. This is usually created in wax and is called a wax-up. This template is also used as a guide during preparation and temporisation between visits.

Visualising the wax-up

At this visit, the wax-up will be discussed to preview the finished result. In some instances, it may be able to recreate the finished result in the mouth in plastic.

After agreeing the wax-up, at the preparation appointment the teeth are conservatively contoured and reshaped to allow for the thickness of porcelain making up the veneers. An impression is taken of the prepared teeth and temporary veneers are fitted. These temporary veneers are made in a tooth coloured plastic material but in every other respect are very similar to the final veneers. This gives the patient chance to live with their final smile and decide if there is anything they would wish to change.
